In the warm shallow seas that once flooded the ancient continents, ammonites built their spiralling shells chamber by chamber. By regulating gas and liquid within these chambers, they could float, rise, and sink through the water at will. Exposed to light and current they flourished for over three hundred million years enjoying their vivid lives.
